Longest-running TV shows ever made: The top 10 longest-running TV series of all time including Days Of Our Lives, Sesame Street and The Tonight Show

Coming in at number one is Guiding Light with a staggering 18,262 episodes.

Guiding Light was on for so long it first aired on radio before the creation of commercial television, so in fact 15 of those 72 years were on radio.

It eventually transitioned to TV in 1952 and ended its run in high definition in 2009 when it was cancelled due to low ratings.

Proving that we just love to watch American soap series, this drama took place in the fictional town of Springfield and centred on the middle class Bauer family.

Some of the show’s most memorable storylines include the death of Leslie Bauer in 1976, who was run down by a drunk driver. Viewers at the time were particularly shocked by the randomness of the event considering how popular the character was.

The character of Annie Dutton also kept the show on its tows from 1994 to 1998.

Her plots included everything from attempted murder, kidnapping, drugging and an escape that saw her set a mattress on fire.

Christopher Walken, Brittany Snow and Peter Gallagher are just some Hollywood stars who got their start on the series.
