Following the news that Pope Francis died at 88 on Easter Monday, Catholics worldwide are in mourning and looking ahead to the future to consider who could be the next Pope.
Pope Francis’ death prompts a centuries-old process of choosing his successor in an event known as a conclave.
In uncanny timing, the 2024 Oscar-winning film Conclave became available for Australians to stream on April 22 on Prime Video.
Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanly Tucci, Isabella Rossellini and John Lithgow, is a fictional take on the secretive process of selecting a new pontiff.
As the real-life event of the papal conclave begins in the next 15 to 20 days, you’ll want to watch Conclave as some of its scenes will likely mirror ones the world will soon see.
What is Conclave about?
Conclave is based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel of the same name, inspired by the 2005 conclave it gives a glimpse into the inner workings of the Catholic church.
In the film, Fiennes plays Cardinal Lawrence who is tasked with leading the covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the centre of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of the church.
