Parents drop $600k on luxury three-storey treehouse – with one very special reason in mind

Every kid imagines themselves living in a treehouse.

Although, most of us couldn’t have even conjured up this three-storey tree mansion in our wildest dreams.

In an episode of Building Off The Grid – which you can watch for free on 9Now – parents Chad and Laurel Taylor were dedicated to bringing their luxury vision to life, for a very special reason.

“This has been over a decade in the making. The real reason why we are building a treehouse where we’re building it is to spend extra time with our family,” Chad explained.

“Our kids are growing up very, very quick and every minute counts.”

Nestled high up on a ridge above McHenry, Maryland, the family – and their construction site – had an incredible view across the lush greenery below.

Chad and Laurel gave themselves just eight weeks to build the two-bedroom, two-bathroom treehouse with a complete wrap-around deck from scratch, with a total budget of US400,000 (AU$623,000).

The couple had never done anything like it before, so they anticipated some challenges along the way… Starting with the fact they’re both scared of heights.

In month two of the build, things were going to plan right up until Chad made a mistake with the scheduling of the plywood wall delivery.

“This messes up our budget, our timing and then it messes up the whole schedule moving forward,” he said.

To make matters worse, a few days later two weeks of constant rain brought things to a complete standstill yet again.

It was clear their two-month time frame was out with window and now the race was on to complete the build before the harsh winter set in.

That also didn’t happen, but after four long months the treehouse was finally complete.

Chad estimated the $623,000 budget had also blown out by “10-15 per cent” due to the extended timing, which sure made this an expensive project.

But, for the Taylor family, it was worth it.

“Building off the grid was challenging. It was worth it because we’re going to spend so much family time in the house, enjoying each other’s company on the deck,” a very proud Chad reacted.
