Just as in Thorpe’s novel, Margo gets pregnant after a brief affair with her English teacher Mark, who works at the local junior college she attends. At 20 years old, alone with the baby and unemployed, Margo faces eviction if she can’t find a way to pay rent, but when her estranged father shows up and asks to move in with her, she says yes for the childcare that he can provide.
