EXCLUSIVE: Actress Hattie Hook knew she had a unique challenge ahead of her in Season 2 of Stan Original Series Ten Pound Poms.
At the end of the first season, her character Pattie gave birth.
Despite having the support of her own family, in an on-set interview with 9Entertainment Hook explained that there is a lot to explore in how Pattie, a 16-year-old single mother with a mixed-race baby, is treated by her 1950s society.
Season 2 of the Stan Original Series Ten Pound Poms arrives March 10, only on Stan.
She also shared that in an attempt to understand Pattie’s situation, she took on a very unusual preparation technique.
“The biggest thing for me this season is that I have to play a mother, which was terrifying because I’m not a mother myself and I really wanted to look like I knew what I was doing on screen,” Hook explained.
“So I hired a baby simulator.”
Like a real baby, Hook lived with a robot designed to mimic the daily schedule of having a newborn – complete with nappy changes and random crying at any hour of the night.
“I was there at like 4 am one night, just thinking I’ve really shot myself in the foot here,” she laughed.
“Who has put me in this situation? Me. There’s no one else to blame here but myself.”

Hilariously, she also had no ability to turn it off herself.
“I rented it from this lady in Perth and it was controlled remotely, so I literally would’ve had to call her and ask her to shut it off,” she said.
“If I wanted to do something I would have to find someone to look after it. So I remember one time I wanted to go and do an exercise class, so I had to get my sister to look after it and she’s not an actor, so she’s like ‘You’re an insane human being.'”
It was definitely an unorthodox approach, and despite the many robot cries, Hook found it to be a really helpful exercise.

“I think one of the main things with having a newborn is that exhaustion, so it really helped me to feel that,” Hook said.
“Anytime there’s a scene when I’m really overtired, I can just tap into, ‘How did I feel that time at 4am with the robot baby?'” she joked.
Ten Pound Poms stars Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones, Black Mirror) and Warren Brown (Luther) as Pattie’s parents Annie and Terry Roberts, and Michelle Keegan (Fool Me Once) as nurse Kate Thorne.
