Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to halt federal funding for NPR and PBS, deeming it “taxpayer subsidization of biased media.”
The order directs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to cease direct funding to the media outlets.
But earlier this week, the CPB sued Trump in court after he sought to remove three of its five board members, including Sony’s Tom Rothman. A federal judge has set a hearing for later this month.
The executive order states, “At the very least, Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, and the Government is entitled to determine which categories of activities to subsidize.”
