As former corporate executives, couple Jeff and Jen were more used to New York City skyscrapers and conference rooms than off-the-grid living.
But after making a change, the couple felt the call of nature – and you’ve never seen outdoor living quite like this.

In an episode of Building Off The Grid – which you can watch for free on 9Now – Jeff and Jen set about bringing their vision of a large, luxury tent holiday home to life.
They purchased 14 hectares of land in remote Texas Hill Country as the location of their dream safari-style tent.
With a large living space, fully functional kitchen, resort-style bathroom, primary king-size bedroom and full wrap around deck, it was an ambitious month-long plan – with an equally as ambitious budget.
This was estimated to be a $153,000 tent, with potential for even more.
“We’re starting with one tent on this property but if we find that our family and friends love it as much as we think they will, the plan is to build multiple tents for everybody to enjoy ’cause we want to share this with as many people as we can,” Jeff said.

But building a space in the harsh Texas weather was no easy feat, as the couple and their builders battled heat exhaustion and then days of delays due to rain.
In week three of the build, terrifying encounters with a snake and a scorpion made the project a little more terrifying for Jen, but soon she and Jeff completed the tent only a few days past their one-month deadline.

Jeff estimated that they’d gone a little over budget too, spending $160,000 in total due to weather delays.
Jeff and Jen said they had underestimated just how challenging their ultimate tent house would be to build but for the couple, it was 100 per cent worth it.

“A lot of times throughout the project we thought we couldn’t make it through,” Jen admitted.
“But we did and having all our family and friends here has made it all worth it!”
