A late-night curfew imposed Tuesday on a square-mile section of downtown Los Angeles has impacted several entertainment venues in the area, resulting in cancellations and postponements.
The curfew, which runs 8 p.m.-6 a.m. as is expected to be extended into Wednesday night, was imposed by the city Tuesday to curb looting in the area amid growing protests over ICE raids and the Trump administration calling in the National Guard and Marines. It involved an area that extends east to west from the 5 Freeway to the 110 Freeway; and from north to south from the 10 Freeway to where the 110 and 5 freeways merge.
In addition, the 101 Freeway on- and off-ramps near the federal building complex will remain closed today due to the continued protests, the Los Angeles Police Department said today.
The curfew and closures have impacted several entertainment venues in the section of downtown that includes the Arts District and entertainment hub L.A. Live. The latter event complex houses Crypto.com Arena, the Peacock Theater and the massive Regal L.A. Live cineplex among other high-profile venues.
The area under curfew also houses the Mark Taper Forum, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Convention Center.
Below is a list of closures so far. Check back for more updates.
Among the movie theaters, the Alamo Drafthouse closed early Tuesday and is doing the same tonight for its shows that start after 6 p.m. Regal at L.A. Live has been selling tickets on its site and has given no indication it is being impacted by the curfew.
The Peacock Theater has canceled The Fly High Fest scheduled for Friday night that included performances by Chino Pacas, Los Caimanes, T3R Elemento, Kane Rodriguez, Estevan Plazola, Omar Ruiz and El De La Guitarra. The venue has shows Friday (Bini) and Saturday (Fonseca) with tickets still being sold for both at this time.
At the Mark Taper Forum, Hamlet starring Patrick Ball (The Pitt), Gina Torres (Suits) and Coral Peña (Our Dear Dead Drug Lord) canceled Tuesday and Wednesday’s performances. It has shows running daily (dark on Monday, two shows Sunday) through July 6.
At Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the next performance of L.A. Opera’s production of Verdi’s Rigoletto is scheduled for Thursday. Tickets remain on sale and the group’s website says that “while this is a rapidly changing situation, at this point, all performances are planned as originally scheduled, but we will keep you posted if that changes.”
The Ahmanson Theatre is dark but gearing up for its run of the 2023 Tony-winning revival Parade, which opens June 17.
On Tuesday, Walt Disney Concert Hall canceled its Seoul Chamber Music concert. Its schedule is dark until July 9, when a run of five Paul Simon concerts are scheduled to begin.
At Crypto.com Arena, the next scheduled events are a Los Angeles Sparks-Seattle Storm WNBA game on June 17, and the Wu-Tang Clan concert on June 22.
At the Los Angeles Convention Center, one planned day event Thursday is going on as scheduled, as is a SoCal Cup youth volleyball tournament scheduled to run Friday-Sunday. Organizers on Wednesday posted a statement from the convention center saying, “At this time, while there have been isolated incidents, the city remains open for business and the vast majority of the region is unaffected. Local law enforcement agencies are actively monitoring the situation and have increased their presence in areas of concern to ensure public safety. While we do not believe your group will be directly impacted, we are closely monitoring the situation and will provide any relevant updates in real-time. LACC is operating as usual, and our staff is here and ready to execute this event successfully. We look forward to welcoming The SoCal Cup Volleyball Tournament and providing a positive and safe experience.”
