Dolly Parton is arguably one of the greatest songwriters of a generation and it turns out she’d go to just about any length to produce a hit.
In a resurfaced clip from a 1998 interview promoting her 35th solo album titled Hungry Again, Dolly revealed she literally made herself ‘hungry again’ to remember her childhood dreams and experiences.

To prepare for the album Dolly returned to her Tennessee home where she grew up as one of 12 children.
“I fasted and went without food for three weeks. I wanted to get back in touch with my childhood and who I was and I wanted to write and sing like I was hungry again,” Dolly explained.

Over the years, Dolly has been very open about her experience growing up in poverty.
“I have a lot of memories from my childhood, not all of them good because we had a lot of hard times,” she explained.
Dolly reflected on her often tough childhood revealing her only “regrets”.
“My dad was a father, my mum was mum – she had one on her and one in her as long as I can remember, for real,” she recalled.
“But they worked very hard and the only regrets I have of my childhood is how hard my mum and dad had to work to make it.

“But they never complained and out of that came a very rich life and it’s given me many things to appreciate and many things to write about,” she continued.
“And I do appreciate the value of a dollar no matter how much I make. I’m always busier counting my blessings than I ever am my money.”
Going back to her home and reliving the highs and lows of growing up made for a very unique experience.
