It’s a common misconception that identical twins have the same fingerprints and could therefore frame each other if they ever committed a crime.
Turns out, that’s not the case at all.
Australia’s Most Identical, a special interest series airing on Channel 9 and 9Now, debunked that myth during its premiere episode.

In the quest to find Australia’s Most Identical, one hundred pairs of twins from across the country gathered and underwent a series of preliminary tests to narrow it down to the top 20.
The identical twins found out just how similar they were by measuring their height and weight, testing their handedness, comparing their strength and fitness and coordination levels.
Of course another one of those tests of similarity were comparing their fingerprints.
See just how those tests were carried out in the video below:
“Identical twins’ fingerprints are far more similar than regular siblings,” twin doctors Chiris and Xand explained.
Although they were similar, they weren’t identical and could be distinguished.
”Even though you’re identical you guys still have different finger prints,” an expert explained.
“So if you guys commit a crime we’d still be able to get you.”
Scott Cam and Dr Jana Pittman, both parents of fraternal twins themselves, lead the search for Australia’s Most Identical.
Nearly one in every 250 pregnancies in Australia results in identical twins, but can some twins be more identical than others?
Australia’s Most Identical seeks to answer this question by bringing together sets of twins from diverse backgrounds and putting them through a fascinating series of tests and challenges, ranging from mind-boggling 3D facial scans, to tests of their creative capabilities, and more.
Australia’s Most Identical continues Wednesday night at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
