Dance Moms’ Kelly Hyland’s heartbreaking health update after cancer battle: ‘Terrifying’

Dance Moms star Brooke Hyland has shared her mum Kelly Hyland is undergoing open heart surgery following her breast cancer battle.

The star, 27, took to TikTok to explain that her mother, 54, is suffering a “leaking heart”.

“You guys all watched her ring the bell, finish up her chemo and all of her breast cancer related things,” Brooke told her 4.2 million followers.

“Unfortunately right after that, she got news that she has to have open heart surgery,” Brooke said.

“They are hoping to go in robotically but if they aren’t able to reach her heart then they will have to go in the traditional way. It’s terrifying.”

According to daughter Brooke, Kelly sought multiple doctor opinions to find the cause of her “leaking heart”. 

“Some say that she’s had it since she was younger and that her valve just doesn’t close properly,” Brooke said.

“Others have said that it might be a side effect of the cancer because it could be a tear.”

Brooke concluded asking followers to show their support: “Please send all your love, thoughts and prayers to my strong mama.”

Kelly is a mum to Brooke, Paige and Josh Hyland. She appeared on Dance Moms from 2011 to 2014 with her girls but left the show following a clash with studio owner and teacher Abby Lee Miller.

Kelly’s cancer journey

The health update comes just a few short months after Kelly officially said “Peace out to cancer”.

In April 2025, Kelly successfully marked the end of her breast cancer treatments after an 11-month battle.

At the time, Kelly celebrated the milestone cheered as she rang the bell in her hospital three times.

Kelly first shared news of her diagnosis with E!News in May 2024.

She revealed she was battling invasive carcinoma stage 1, and said she was shocked as she had a “clean” mammogram just eight months prior to her diagnosis.

“I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months,” Hyland said.

“I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.”

One of her first signs that something was wrong she said was her “significant weight loss” and finding a lump in her breast.
