Malcolm in the Middle’s Frankie Muniz reunites with TV parents days after candid mental health update


Frankie Muniz has reunited with his on-screen parents Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek as the Malcolm in the Middle reboot films.

A moment 18 years in the making, Muniz shared his first behind-the-scenes photo from the Disney+ revival.

All three actors are set to return for their respective roles as Malcolm, Hal and Lois for a limited, four-episode series.

Sharing the photo to his Instagram, Muniz wrote: “Always good to have Mom and Dad around!!”

The on-screen reunion comes days after Muniz shared a candid update on his mental health, in a post that concerned fans.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Frankie wrote: “If I’m being 100% honest… Mentally/emotionally I may be at a new low. Just wanted to say it out loud.”

Fans rushed to the comments to show their support for the former child star. Others praised Muniz for being honest about such important conversations.

The star however, has expressed his excitement for the revival, with news of the official reboot confirmed in December 2024.

“I have been waiting for this moment for 18 years,” Muniz said in a post at the time. “Let’s find out where Malcolm and his family are now.”

Running from 2000 to 2006, the US family sitcom gave us seven seasons, 151 episodes and an incredibly catchy theme tune.

“The original Malcolm in the Middle saw young genius Malcolm trying to navigate life with his quirky, often difficult family,” read a press release for the series return.

“In these brand-new episodes, Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

The reunion photo brought on a wave of emotions for fans who grew up watching the series, with one commenting: “I started watching Malcom last week, took me back to childhood. Now seeing this picture makes a grown man want to cry”. 

“My goodness. I feel like I’m 12 again just looking at you guys,” wrote another.

While a third added: ”The family is back together and I couldn’t be happier to see it 😍.”

But fans weren’t the only ones excited.

“25 years since we premiered Malcolm in the Middle. I’m so excited… that I may have peed just a little bit,” Cranston, 68, joked at the time.

While Kaczmarek said: “What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again! We’re very, very excited about coming back together and seeing what this family has been up to.”

Also set to return are Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson who will reprise their respective roles of Reese and Francis in the revival series.

According to Variety, original actor Erik Per Sullivan will not be returning as youngest brother Dewey. Rising star Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will take over the role.

The miniseries will stream on Disney+. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

Muniz’ recent post comes 25 years after the show first aired and shot the young actor to stardom. Muniz was just 15 years old when the first season premiered in 2000. 

The teen star played the titular character Malcolm for seven seasons alongside a talented cast including, of course, Cranston and Kaczmarek.
