With quite a bit of critical consensus on who and what should win the prizes at the 78th Annual Tony Awards at Radio City, the night has the potential for being either a get-in-line and hand-out-the-trophies we all expect, or a blow-my-mind-who-could-have-seen-that-coming evening. The critic in me – I’m one of the folks who made all those predictions and cast my Tony votes – is hoping for the former. But as a person who loves the unexpected in awards shows, I can’t help but also lean a bit into the latter. We’re about to find out, in any case, beginning with the pre-show, The Tony Awards: Act One, which will see awards in some of the technical categories handed out, maybe even a performance award or two if memory serves from last year. The pre-show will be followed immediately with the 78th Tony Awards themselves. Settle in.
